Imran Khan outwitted the opposition's bid to depose him on Sunday, when deputy speaker Qasim Suri, a member of the ruling PTI, rejected a no-confidence resolution.
Pakistan's president, Arif Alvi, stated in a late-night tweet that Imran Khan will continue in office until a caretaker prime minister is selected, after the country had its most politically volatile day this year and braced for yet another leadership crisis. "Mr. Imran Ahmad Khan Niazi shall remain as Prime Minister till the nomination of a caretaker Prime Minister in accordance with Article 224 A (4) of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan," the president's office announced in a tweet.
In a series of swift moves, Imran Khan outwitted the opposition's bid to depose him on Sunday, when deputy speaker Qasim Suri, a member of the ruling PTI, rejected a no-confidence resolution against Khan under Article 5 of the constitution. Khan has now asked for new elections to be held.
The administration labelled the attempts to "topple the government" as part of a foreign plot, while opposition leaders accused Khan of misgovernance and blamed him for the country's economic difficulties.
The Supreme Court will hear the case on Monday after the opposition filed an appeal against the rejection of the no-confidence vote. The Supreme Court will decide whether the no-confidence vote will be re-run or new elections will be held, which the Imran Khan administration has stated are likely to take place within three months.
The country remained on edge on Sunday before of the much-anticipated no-trust vote in parliament, with security heightened around Islamabad, the capital city. Imran Khan was not there when the discussion began, approximately an hour after the session was supposed to begin. Within minutes, the motion was defeated, the assembly session was adjourned, and Imran Khan delivered a surprise speech to the country, asking for new elections.

"The President of Pakistan, Dr. Arif Alvi, has approved the Prime Minister of Pakistan's suggestion to dissolve the National Assembly under Article 58 (1) read with Article 48 (1) of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan's Constitution. (sic)" said the president's office in a tweet.
